Worley is getting LOUD!

Loud Shirt Day

Worley Loud Shirt Day 2024

This October Worley and I are getting LOUD to make a difference!

We are raising money that will support babies and children who are deaf or have hearing loss. I (Gina) personally knows firsthand what its like to be profoundly deaf. Without the support from Hear and Say, peers like me wouldn't have got the change to be able to go to a mainstream school, college, work and connect with normal hearing peers.

Did you know

1 in 1,000 babies in Australia are born with significant hearing loss,
2 in 1,000 children by school age experience significant hearing loss,
3 in 1,000 children in secondary school require assistance because of hearing loss.

Please support us by donating online to help reach our fundraising goal. Your support will enable Hear and Say to identify hearing loss, help children access hearing technology and secure the therapeutic services they need to thrive.

GUESS WHAT?? WE’RE BACK FOR WORLEY’S 7TH LOUD SHIRT DAY!!

Friday 11th Oct

Welcome back and welcome new members to this year’s Loud Shirt Day 2024! To those whom are new here, my name is Gina Preston and Worley has been sponsoring Loud Shirt Day for the last 6 consecutive years. It began in 2018 when I set it up for the first time with just the Brisbane office. I have watched the community and Worley’s support grow each year and now we’ve expanded to offices around Australia/NZ (Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Gladstone, Mackay, Geelong, New Plymouth) and some international offices (Egypt, Houston, Edmonton). We’ve even had CEO Chris Ashton and the GE leadership team get involved in the last 2 years. So, this year we are looking to expand even further and need your help!

You’re probably wondering what is Loud Shirt Day? … well, you’re in luck, Loud Shirt Day is an annual day in the month of October where we don your loudest shirt and join in supporting our colleagues and peers both internally and externally who are deaf or have difficulty hearing. This event is to raise awareness and support of Worley’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace environment where all our people feel safe and heard.

And, of course, to raise much-needed funds for a not-for-profit charity called Hear and Say to help our hearing impaired/deaf peers gain access to transformative hearing technology and the gift of speech - how awesome is that! Without adequate hearing, peers’ ability to develop spoken language and live independently when older is seriously affected. It is about giving them the best chance they have to minimise long-term effects and eliminate barriers to their education and career opportunities.

Why is it important? Loud Shirt Day is a fun way to brighten everyone’s day and get everyone to come together for a great cause. I am proud to be part sharing my stories with others on this invisible disability and educating others about what we can do to support each other in a workplace environment and in the community.  It's critically important to share our stories / experiences and help educate / support others so YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALONE dealing with or managing someone with invisible or visible disabilities.

What does it mean to me? I am one of the Loud Shirt Ambassadors for the Hear and Say Centre, having received my own cochlear implants at the age of nearly 2 years old. I know what it’s like to be deaf firsthand and being able to receive the life-changing gift of sound I got given - thanks to Hear and Say. I personally would not be where I am today, I wouldn’t have been able to develop a deep love for; movies, music, travelling the world independently and, importantly I get to work alongside normal hearing peers for an awesome company doing what I love.

I am extremely grateful to how far my family and I have come as this has not been an easy journey. It required a lot of work and resources to get to where I am today. A way I can describe it to you is when receiving cochlear implants, it’s not a simple turn on the lights and it’s all working/clear. Think of it as a phone battery charging where it requires lots of energy and effort from completing speech therapy sessions, hearing assessments, hearing tests and occupational therapy to get to where I am today. With my journey and experience, I am incredibly passionate to giving back to the community by giving other deaf and hearing impaired peers the opportunity to live life fully with full sound just like I got.

Did you know? Every day, your support helps Hear and Say centre create magical moments that families will never forget – like when a child hears their parent's voice for the first time. These moments are what it’s all about, and why what you do matters so much! Watch this special moment where Mateo hears for the first time –> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPFD1jgmdZQ&t=1s

Are ready to rise up to the challenge to help us achieve our goal and ditch the plain white shirts for some bold colours? Let’s amplify their voices and change lives!

PS. Here’s a photo of my pugs getting excited for Loud Shirt Day.
